Breastfeeding is an incredible thing, but there are many of us who are self-conscious and do not want to be exposed in public. Do know this: we have the right to feed our children anywhere we are, including the public, but we can choose to do it in a conservative way. Breastfeeding covers allow you to feed your child in public without being concerned about exposing yourself.
Blankets as Breastfeeding Covers
If you’re on a budget, a simple light weight blanket could be the perfect breastfeeding cover for you especially when you have a newborn. You can tie a knot with the corners of the blanket and make it more like a shawl or scarf to drape over you and baby. I do encourage you to get a lightweight blanket simply because we have the tendency to burn up while breastfeeding. A lighter blanket might help you not feel like you’re suffocating. It’ll also help baby not get overly warm while eating.

Car Seat Canopies for Breastfeeding Covers
There are two different types of car seat canopies, but both can be used to cover your car seat and as a breastfeeding cover. One type has Velcro attachments at the top that you can use to attach the canopy to the handle of the car seat. These types normally open like little curtains across the car seat because they also have Velcro openings (mine does anyway). These can be used to cover you also while nursing. There’s usually an opening for your head, and you can close one of the Velcro patches to keep it securely on you while you feed. When finished, you just unbutton the Velcro. It’s very simple.
The second type is a stretchy jersey material. It’s so stretchy that it stretches over the car seat (no Velcro or buttons). You just slide it on. There’s a hole at the top and a larger one at the bottom. Because of the way it is made, you can easily use this as a breastfeeding cover. These are actually my favorite because they are so stretchy, and they’re perfect for when your baby begins moving more. Some babies (mine included) get to where they kick the covers off. Because of the way this one is made, it cannot be kicked off. That’s a mom-win to me!
Both covers can be found on Amazon:
Nursing Poncho as Breastfeeding Cover
The breastfeeding cover poncho is very similar to the second car seat canopy I described. The only difference is it’s a little more fashionable. This cover can serve as double duty also. It is still a cover or your car seat, but it is also a breastfeeding cover also. What is convenient is that it looks like something you would normally wear over your shirt in the fall or winter. Many women prefer the ponchos because they look more like shirts and not like covers, and they are very cute. They are also very versatile and can have multiple uses!

Baby Infinity Nursing Scarf as Breastfeeding Cover
Need a way to carry your breastfeeding cover without people knowing that it’s actually a cover? Then the baby infinity nursing scarf is probably what you need. You literally wear it as an infinity scarf around your neck, and when it’s time to feed, you take it off and put it around you like an actual breastfeeding cover. Convenient and stylish all in one place!

Nursing Apron as Breastfeeding Cover
The last breastfeeding cover I want to mention is a nursing apron. These are convenient because they have straps that go around your neck like an apron (thus, that’s why they’re called “aprons”). If you’re ever worried about the cover being securely in place, this might be a better choice for you. You can adjust the straps how you want them, and there are back straps also. You can still pull the top of it open to see your baby, and you can still double the usage as a car seat canopy if desired.
